A free day ahead and your car pleading for a good road trip. Drive to Thommankutthu is a great option for a weekend getaway from Kochi.
An early start from Kochi and less than an hour you reach Muvattupuzha, where you could stop for breakfast. You have different option for the food lovers. For a hot plate of dosa or Idly try the Idly house or if you are in for a non veg breakfast, you could try Deepa restaurant know for the Muslim delicacy the beef curry and steaming Appam which would be served to your plates straight from the Tava. After a short break, you can be back on the road. Soon you will be off the main highway as you drive through village roads all the way to Thommankuttu.
Once you reach the forest entry you could change into walking gear. Don’t forget a bottle of water, some refreshments and your camera. You need to take the entrance tickets INR 10 per adult and INR 5/- for kids from the forest office. The gates are open from 08:00 Am to 4:00 Pm. After you enter, you have an option to visit the observatory with some interesting paintings and some facts about the flora and fauna around. This would be a interesting experience for kids.
Follow the forest trails as it leads you to the Kaliyar river, which originates from the nearby hills. With the backdrop of the thick rainforests, this is amazing scenery and is worth the early morning drive. You could continue the walk with the assisted by the lady guards from the locality who will share their love to the forest and also keep warning you with stories of people who could not resist in jumping into the river and were taken away by the fast flowing river. The rocks look dry by should warn you that they are slippery.
A day road trip from Kochi to the nearby hillstations. Visit to Thommankutthu waterfalls, Rainforests Treks, Stop at the scenic Kulamavu Reservoir and drive through lush green rainforests.
You will see tree houses with an amazing view of the forest and bamboo benches to catch up your breathe as you trek up all the way to the waterfalls. Once you reach the view point, you cannot resist your body from walking down the trails to this point right near the waterfalls to merge into the rich forest experience. With the sound of the water gushing down and the music made by the dancing bamboo grooves, you feel the sense being part of nature. You have a small forest hut right near the water falls for you to take a break. For the adventurous ones, you could continue trekking up the hill for a great view of the forest.
It's time to be back in the wheels heading to Kulamavu a scenic hill resort. You have some amazing off road trails ahead of you as you climb through narrow village roads with very less traffic. You will be driving through winding roads with spectacular scenery with waterfalls and lush green hills on either side until you reach the summit with a panoramic view of the hills all around you. The place is out of the world and unique experience that only few people ever got the opportunity to visit.
From here we have some downhills until you reach the State highway 33. You need to head west and follow the winding roads all the way through Kulamavu rain forest to the spectacular Kulamavu lake. You have an option to visit Kulamavu resort for a lavish buffer spread and relax the afternoon at the poolside or settle for a basic food at kulamavu hotel for a homely meals.
After your hill station expedition its time to head home. You will be following the highway down the 12 hairpin bends until you reach the plains where you drive along the river until you reach Thodupuzha then continue on some of the best roads in Kerala and hit back to the city and back home before dark.
